(525 words) Two once bosom friends, landowners Kiril Troekurov and Andrei Dubrovsky, quarreled. The wealthy and wayward Troekurov decided to illegally seize the estate of a poor neighbor, and he easily manages to bribe a local court. Dubrovsky is seriously ill from grief. During the time that Dubrovsky has to hide, a rich neighbor, the old prince Vereisky, is wooing with Troekurova. Father tells his daughter to get ready for the wedding. Masha meets with Dubrovsky and asks him for help. Vladimir promises the girl his defense and gives her a ring, which she will have to put in the hollow of the old tree at the place of their meetings: so he will understand that it is necessary to act immediately. Masha asks him to wait a bit, she is sure that she can persuade her father.
She writes a letter to the prince with a request to cancel the engagement, but Troekurov finds out about this and locks Masha. Then the girl gives the coveted ring to her brother so that he will save her. Near the tree, Sasha notices a boy who takes the ring to take to Dubrovsky, but the child did not know about this and considered the stranger a thief. A fight ensues, and the little messenger is locked in the master’s house.
Masha is married to the prince. When the ceremony is over, the young people get into the carriage and go to their estate. On the road, Dubrovsky stops them with his robbers, opens the door and tells Masha that she is free. But the girl explains to her lover that it is too late, she became the prince's wife and swore allegiance to him. Vereisky shoots Dubrovsky and injures him, he loses consciousness.
Authorities begin the pursuit of a robber gang. Vladimir dissolves his allies and disappears. They say he went abroad, and they did not hear about him anymore.
