The ballad “Svetlana” reflects the Russian spirit and folklore of the Russian mentality, and is read in one breath, in a few minutes.
History of creation
It is worth noting that it was Zhukovsky who was the founder of Russian romanticism. He was a translator, translated over 40 works.
The poet at the beginning of his career read a lot of foreign literature, and the German poet Burger was his idol. Love and respect for the Western world gave such an unexpected beginning. Zhukovsky translated the ballad Lenora by Burger from German into Russian. And it was from him that Zhukovsky took the plot for his ballad. He gave the Russian people real Russian folklore.
Essence
The basic concept is fortune-telling which, in ancient times, was very popular among unmarried girls. They start to guess, and offer Svetlana, but Svetlana is very sad, because for a year now she has not received letters from her dear friend. A tired girl, waiting for her fiancé, decides on fortune-telling, because she no longer has the strength to wait, and from that moment on, terrible minor notes appear in the story.
In a dream, Svetlana sees her lover and leaves with him on a sleigh, but the plot changes right in front of her eyes, suddenly Svetlana sees a hut, going in, sees a grave in the middle of the room, covered with a white veil.
The worst was to come; nightmares, a resurrected corpse, strange pigeons, a blizzard, horses, coffins and frost enveloped her dream, all this certainly keeps the reader in fear and in terrible tension. It seems that, a little bit more, something terrible will happen.
Svetlana sees in the grave of her dead groom. Everything turns upside down, a dead man calls her to him, saying that they should be together. Horror Svetlana wakes up, but for the good in the yard it was sunny, and at that moment her fiance returned, fortunately not dead, but alive and full of love.
Topic
Zhukovsky emphasized a spiritual theme in the epicenter of the plot. And also for contrast, he brought here mystical elements of the genre. In his work, faith in God helps the heroine overcome the devilish temptation of fortune telling.
Religiosity and morality - these are the ideals that the poet sang.
